Which diet is right for me?

We are often inundated with information around different fad diets that come and go, and it can often be hard to really know what to do.

Weight loss is a very important topic for many people newly diagnosed with diabetes as it can have a huge impact on diabetic control. It is often something that people can often run into trouble achieving. Getting your diet right combined with increasing your physical activity will contribute hugely towards beginning to achieve your weight loss goals.

There is a lot of different advice about which diets work best, whether it’s counting calories or reducing carbs as a few examples. Before embarking on any weight loss plans, it’s always best to talk these with your diabetes care team so they can help you decide what might work best for you and how to achieve a balanced diet.

Whatever changes that you make to your diet, whether it’s reducing calories or carbohydrates, following a structured programme such as Slimming World or Weightwatchers or perhaps trying intermittent fasting; it needs to be something that is sustainable for you in the long term and works in with your daily life.

I found this video, very helpful too, I make home made vegetable soup, like carrot and corriander, leek and potato, mushroom, or celery, at lunch time, I add a little Arborio rice and a small amount of potato, instead of cream, I add fresh chopped herbs like parsley, garlic, chilli and coriander which I buy in pots from the supermarket and chop them up and freeze them, (they are excellent for freezing!) the soup can be stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

    Very good video. Filled me with hope that I’ll be able to achieve something and that it’s not one particular option that’s going to work.

    The link referred to in the research paragraph is important to read up on. I should know as I’m participating in the DiRECT trial. Currently in 2nd year and my diabetes has been in remission since April 2016. It’s hard work keeping it that way though.

    You can use things like Cauliflower rice, Celariac chips and courgetti spaghetti which all taste great ( and trust me, I am a very fussy eater so was surprised that I enjoy all of the above!) So I can still enjoy spaghetti bolognese or steak with chips – without all the Carbs!

    This video is EXCELLENT. In my view it shouldn’t be an optional extra. Makes it very clear that you can do a number of things which YOU CAN STICK TO rather than trying to follow a one-diet suits all.
